Photodynamic Therapy for Bacterial Reduction of Periodontal Microorganisms.

- Abstract
Bacteria, bacterial substances, and their metabolites are considered the main cause of periodontal disease. A new treatment possibility has been found by implementing photodynamic therapy, combining soft laser irradiation and treatment with toluidine blue "O" dye. This study examined the clinical effectiveness of this combination in reducing periodontal pathogens, such as Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans, Porphyromonas gingivalis, and Prevotella intermedia. Following application of toludine blue "O," samples were lased with a diode laser with a wavelength of 690 nm for one minute. Before and after lasing, bacterial samples were obtained from dental pockets and were analyzed microbiologically. The initial value was compared with a control value. This combined treatment resulted in a significant bacterial reduction by up to 4 logs (P < 0.001), but complete elimination of all three microorganisms was achieved in none of the cases. However, this treatment seems to be more effective in reducing black pigmented microorganisms such as Porphyromonas gingivalis and Prevotella intermedia. First results of this study allow the conclusion that photodynamic treatment is a valuable additional method without any side effects in the treatment of patients with periodontal disease.
