- Abstract
Repeated oral administration of 10 mg/kg/day thiacloprid, a neonicotinoid insecticide, for 28 consecutive days in Gallus domesticus produced reduced feed intake, dullness, depression, ruffled feathers, undigested watery droppings, cyanosis of comb, reduction in body weight, head down condition, decrease in motor and rearing activity of birds with weakness in limbs, difficulty in standing and inability to put weight on legs. There was marked reduction in body weight of the thiacloprid treated birds and no significant change found in the weights of control groups. There was no significant effect on haematological parameters except haemoglobin. In present study, thiacloprid did not influence packed cell volume but caused a significant decline in haemoglobin concentration, from 0 day value of 7.49 ±0.37 g/dl to 6.07 ± 0.11 g/dl on day 28 of insecticide treatment No significant alterations were seen in the total erythrocyte count, total leucocyte count, erythrocyte sedimentation rate and mean corpuscular volume. Normal erythrocyte indices suggested that thiacloprid does not interfere with erythropoiesis even when administered in repeated oral doses and it is a safer insecticide.
