Introducing dialogic feedback to HCA education: reflection in action.
- Authors
Hayes, Catherine; Fulton, John A.
- Abstract
Dialogic feedback is the provision of feedback on submitted work, with which learners can engage and then formulate a response as to how they will address highlighted issues of importance within it. Written for healthcare assistant (HCA) educators and trainers, this article provides an insight into the processes of formative and summative assessment and how dialogic feedback can be a useful means of engaging HCA students in practice. The processes advocated are presented as a means of improving interactive dialogue with students and as a means of encouraging deeper learning, which can be further integrated into practice with patients and their families and carers. The article outlines the core characteristics of where using dialogic feedback can be used as a potential means of improving the transferable skillsets that HCAs attain in practice. Core aspects of reflection are considered and their place within future curriculum development for HCAs is outlined.
