- Abstract
Objective: This study aims to evaluate the baseline knowledge, attitudes and practices of healthcare professionals in Jordan towards pharmacovigilance, and to investigate any factors that could be affecting these levels. Design: This was a cross sectional study. The study utilized a convenient sample of 106 physicians. Materials and methods: A total of 20 primary and comprehensive health centers were visited. Ail physicians working at those centers were approached to fill the questionnaire. The final number of respondents was 106 physicians. Results: Mean knowledge score (SD) was 10.6 (2.1) out of 20. Attitudes score was relatively high (mean (SD) of 18.2 (1.6) out of 20). Mean practices score was lower (mean (SD) of 14.1 (3.7) out of 30). There was a statistically significant difference in knowledge between the different age groups (F(4,80) = 3.087, p = 0.02). Lack of educational programs about adverse drug reactions was mentioned by 11.3% of the physicians as the reason for not receiving updated information on adverse drug reactions. Using modern ways of communication (internet, sms, etc.) was suggested by 14.2% of physicians as the best way to increase the efficiency of the pharmacovigilance system in Jordan. Conclusion: The current study points out that physicians working at health centers of the Jordanian Ministry of Health have poor knowledge and practices towards pharmacovigilance. However, they have positive attitudes. Age group significantly affected their level of knowledge. Results of the current study highlight a need for some interventions to increase the efficiency of the Jordan Pharmacovigilance Center.
