Metabolic Effects of Opiate Use during Pregnancy: A Reappraisal.

- Abstract
Background: Pregnant females consuming drugs of abuse are becoming a severe problem. As this habit increases the risk of complications during pregnancy, may permanently harm the infant (Directly or indirectly). The present review was aimed to evaluate opiate use during pregnancy, its mechanism of action, the metabolic implications and the possible consequences to this addictive behavior for the mother and baby. It also analyzed the effects of the opiate addiction treatment on pregnant women. Objectives: To investigate the usage of opiates during pregnancy, metabolic effects and potential consequences this may cause addictive behavior on the mother and the fetus, and to study the effects of treatment for opiate addiction in pregnant women. Methodology: This reappraisal reviews literatures on opiate use during pregnancy. All the accessible literatures were evaluated in the PubMed database, as well as historical articles, texts and references cited public works. Results: All data related to the objectives proposed in this review were found, it can be classified into 5 sections: usode opiates during pregnancy, mechanisms of action, consequences of opiate use in pregnancy, addiction treatment opioid in pregnant women and effects on the newborn. Conclusion: Opiate use during pregnancy is a risk factor for mother and child. It causes complications during pregnancy and the presence of neonatal withdrawal symptoms and sudden death. On the other hand it is found that the treatment with methadone and buprenorphine reduce the risk; however, must be strictly controlled in order to avoid potential complications related with their use.
