- Abstract
Objective: Variations in the lumbrical have been observed frequently, either in routine dissections or clinical practice. The present case report was aimed to describe a rare variation in lumbrical and its significance. Material and Methods: The hand region of 65 year adult male cadaver was dissected during gross anatomy teaching program. Results: Accessory slip of the origin of the first lumbrical muscle was observed in the right hand of a 65-year male cadaver whereas the pattern of lumbrical muscles of left hand was normal. The first lumbrical took origin from the palmer surface and ulnar side of the flexor digitorum profundus for the index finger, while the additional slip of first lumbrical arose from the ulnar side of the tendon of flexor pollicis longus for thumb proximal to the flexor retinaculum. Later it joined the first lumbrical on the radial side of the index finger. Conclusion: Presence of additional belly of the first lumbrical originating from the tendon of FPL within the carpal tunel is not common. It may compress the median nerve causing carpal tunel syndrome (CTS) or there could be decrease in the functional efficiency in hands with loss of intrinsic muscle function which can lead to claw hand.
