- Title
The Hutterites' Story of War-Time Migration from South Dakota to Manitoba and Alberta.
- Authors
Armishaw, Bradley
- Abstract
The article examines a hegira of Hutterites who fled persecution in South Dakota to resettle in areas of Canada, particularly Manitoba and Alberta. While the author urges that much literature has addressed the persecution and emigration of Mennonites, it is attested that not much is known of this Hutterite diaspora. A full account of this story is provided, beginning with the exodus of Hutterites and Mennonites from 18th century Russia as chronicled by Hutterite delegate Paul Tschetter. The anti-German sentiment among Americans that forced the settlers to flee South Dakota following World War I is chronicled, as is the resultant colonization of Canada. The ideology of these settlers is examined as a product of their persecution.
