- Abstract
The article presents an examination of the creation and deployment of the United States Army Ambulance Service (USAAS) and the American Expeditionary Force (AEF) in France during World War I. The origin of the USAAS as an outgrowth of the voluntary American Field Service is discussed. The differences in operational procedure, unit organization, and efficacy of the two motorized casualty transport corps are contrasted. The design, construction, and war modifications of the General Motors Co. ambulance assigned to the AEF and the Ford Motor Co. Model 1917 ambulance used by the USAAS are compared.
