Drug-induced thyroiditis and papillary carcinoma in a minocycline-pigmented black thyroid gland. Minocycline has been proposed to induce thyroiditis via follicular cell damage or antibody-mediated activity.[4] Thyroid tissue damage has been reported to be a known risk factor for precipitating Graves' hyperthyroidism,[1] thus, indicating a causative association between minocycline-induced black thyroid and Graves' hyperthyroidism. (B) Hematoxylin-eosin staining of thyroid glands shows deposits of granules within the cytoplasm of the follicular epithelial cells and colloids that are histological characteristics of the black thyroid.
