- Abstract
The global interest in utilizing nickel for electric vehicle (EV) batteries has garnered significant attention. In the form of NiSO4·6H2O crystals, nickel is a crucial raw material for fabricating battery cathodes in EVs. These crystals are commonly derived from the hydrometallurgical method. This study investigated the pH effect on the precipitation method to determine the optimal pH range that yields the highest nickel recovery for synthesizing NiSO4.6H2O crystals. The source material, nickel pig iron (NPI), obtained from a mini blast furnace using the pyrometallurgical method, was employed in the leaching process. Sodium hydroxide (NaOH) was used as the precipitating agent during precipitation. The results demonstrated that the best-performing variable was pH 4, resulting in a nickel content of 1913 ppm and a nickel recovery percentage of 53.24%. In order to ensure successful commercialization, future research should focus on reducing Na2SO4 impurities through an optimized washing process, aiming for higher-grade crystals with enhanced product specifications.
