The article focuses on the story of the Scots and Darien and William Paterson, known as the author of the Scots' "disaster" at Darien, who planned to establish a trading company in Scotland and found a colony on the Caribbean side of the isthmus of Panama to facilitate the exchange of goods between east and west. Topics discussed include the first expedition from Leith in 1698 that founded Caledonia and the second expedition in mid-1699 which found the deserted settlement in Caledonia.
