- Abstract
The article discusses the issues of citizenship, a foreign domestic worker's illegal pregnancy, and the outlook for a multi-ethnic national identity in Malaysia. The discussion's theoretical frames are the labor contracts for foreign workers, the country's system of labor control, citizenship negotiation, agency theory, social boundaries, and human rights. The legal implications in a story of a foreign worker called Maria who gave up her illegal child, Sunny, to a Malaysian couple are mentioned. Laws related to the living conditions and employment rights of foreign migrant workers are noted. Human rights advocacy in Malaysia is mentioned.
