- Abstract
This article represents the results of a study of the information needs and information seeking behaviour of students at the Islamia University of Bahawalpur. It endeavours to identify the purpose of using library, information sources preferred, methods employed for getting the needed information and library use pattern. A questionnaire was distributed among six hundred students in fifteen departments of the university covering all the faculties. Data shows a vast majority of students rely on books for satisfying their academic and research needs adequately. Some consider journals, encyclopedias and yearbooks, which provide required information to some extent. It is encouraging that almost half of the students consider Internet is the source that provides up-to-date information efficiently. The search engines used are Yahoo, Google, Msn and Ask.com. The majority of students complained about insufficient provision of computers. They also demanded more advanced services i.e. bibliographic, indexing, abstracting and inter library loan services. These difficulties faced by students were included with rationale for taking measure to eliminate them. Responses indicate major difficulties in using catalogue, finding bibliographic aids and searching the required material on the shelves. On the whole, students perceived IUB library' collections and service as inadequate. A complaint of non-cooperation in attitude of library' staff towards supporting students was identified.
