- Abstract
The article analyzes the nature and significance of the character of Tom Bombadil in the novel "The Lord of the Rings" by J. R. R. Tolkien focusing on his embodiment of the spirit of objectivity. Topics discussed are Bombadil as symbolism of free will, fear, jealousy, pride, desire and psychological weaknesses that underlie evil, Tolkien's attribution of Tom as a representation of a natural pacifist view of the rights and wrongs of power and control, and belief of self-mastery.
