- Title
Webster's "Worthyest Monument": The Problem of Posterity in The Duchess of Malfi.
- Authors
Chalk, Brian
- Abstract
A literary criticism of the play "The Duchess of Malfi" by English dramatist John Webster is presented. The author argues that the drive in the play is derived from the dramatist's desire for the work to endure posterity as well as his disbelief that it will. The article also focuses on the tragic plot of the play, including the relations between the characters of the Duchess, Ferdinand, and Antonio.
