- Abstract
This article discusses what phonics and fluency add to the process of reading and in the reading development of a child. The article suggests that rhyming poetry helps to promote the integration of word recognition, accuracy, fluency, and expressiveness. A three-step sequence of instruction is introduced, which can be used by teachers to teach phonics and fluency through rhyming poetry. These steps are identifying a target word family, working with the word family, and providing follow-up activities for word mastery.
