- Authors
Maddicott, Hilary
- Abstract
The article focuses on the funeral ode "Threnodiun Appolinare: To the Memory of the Right Honourable Philip Late Earl of Leicester," which has escaped identification as by poet Elkanah Settle (1648-1724). The author discusses the sole copy of the poem in the Bodleian Library in Oxford, England, explores the resemblance of the ode's appearance and content with many later works under Settle's name, and examines key words or phrases in the Leicester poem which recur in later Settle works.
