- Abstract
The article examines the first issues of the 19th century French arts and literature periodical "L'Artiste." The fine arts system going through major changes during the 19th century and the periodical's role in the subjectification of the art world are mentioned. According to the author, its depiction of art and artists in its early issues was more abstract. Topics discussed include fine arts criticism, the notion of being an artist, and the short story "Le Chef-d'œuvre inconnu" by Honoré de Balzac.
