The Sense Memory of "My Father's Martial Art".
- Authors

- Abstract
From the iconic evocations of youth discovered through the taste and smell of a madeleine cookie in Marcel Proust's À la recherche du temps perdu to modern physiological studies of the deep connection between our olfactory system and emotional states, culture and science have long attempted to grapple with "sense memory" or how the experience of various senses guide our memory and help organize our understanding of the world. Taking Stephen Shu-ning Liu's poem "My Father's Martial Art" as its central focus, this essay argues that fictional and scientific studies in this area have provided a blueprint for interpreting works which fall within the "sense memory genre." Through many instances of fictional representation and scientific research, these works aim to find expression for the ineffable bonds our senses have to memory and our experience of the world.
