- Abstract
The twelve interpolated stories in Don Quixote have always attracted critical attention. Departing from past times when some English literature scholars regarded these as an imperfection, in recent times some critics have argued that Cervantes deployed them as elements characteristic of classic literature. This article revisits the question of the interpolated stories and suggests that Cervantes used them for a variety of reasons and purposes. The most important of these is perhaps to deploy them to parody non-realist fiction -- these interpolations were originally written in the fashion of romances that, once made part of the story of Don Quixote, became realist fiction. Another possible function of these stories is to express the ideology of modern humanism.
