- Abstract
This article cites a study determining the extent to which variables from the individual, family, and community contexts are predictors of mothers' satisfaction with medical care of their children with diabetes. The study was also aimed to determine whether mothers' satisfaction with medical care is significantly associated with medical outcomes such as adherence to treatment regimens and the health status of their children with diabetes. The participants in the present study were 158 children with diabetes and their mothers or female guardians. The children were receiving medical treatment at outpatient diabetes clinics of two university-affiliated pediatric hospitals. Blood samples were drawn at the time of the interview to determine the children's health status. The mothers' satisfaction was measured with the Patient Satisfaction Questionnaire. The means, standard deviations, and ranges for mother's satisfaction with medical care, family stress and resources, neighborhood stressors, perception of racism, adherence to medical regimen, and child's health status were examined. Findings have confirmed the importance of patient satisfaction as a predictor of adherence to the treatment regimen as evidenced by the significant association between mother's satisfaction with medical care and dietary adherence reported by their children with diabetes.
