- Abstract
The article presents research papers related to collective bargaining in higher education. Twenty-five units have been recognized, and faculty bargaining is proceeding in each. They include Rutgers University, the state and community colleges, the Newark College of Engineering, and the College of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. The purpose of this research is to elucidate two questions: why have faculties in institutions of higher education chosen to organize?; and what impact is the faculty bargaining process likely to have on decisions relating to educational policy and planning, the faculty personnel system, and faculty-administration relationships? This research has been conducted through observations of negotiating activities at Rutgers and other institutions in the state. Other methods of inquiry will include interviews with administrators and employee organization officials, and an analysis of documents that have come out of the bargaining process. In addition, a questionnaire survey of a sample of faculty from the various institutions will measure differences in faculty attitudes and behavior in the collective negotiations process.
