- Title
The Symphony Orchestra Repertoire: Can there be an American Core Canon?
- Authors
Pompe, Jeffrey; Tamburri, Lawrence
- Abstract
We analyzed American symphony orchestra repertoire for the 2000 through 2006 seasons to help determine how well American composers have been integrated into the symphonic canon. Although orchestras have increased their performances of American composers significantly in the past 120 years - increasing the percentage of American performances from 4.3 to 11.2 percent - European composers from the classical and romantic period continue to dominate the concert hall. While a larger percentage of American composers are performed today than in years past only a few are performed consistently.
