Haemolytic conditions of newborn - A laboratory study.

- Abstract
Neonatal jaundice is one of the commonest finding in first week of life. Aim of our study is to know causes and incidence of haemolytic conditions in newborn and to differentiate between physiological and pathological jaundice in newborn at the earliest. We studied 60 newborn cases of hemolytic conditions. Physiological jaundice constituted 56.7% of cases. ABO incompatibility was the commonest cause of pathological jaundice. Lowest haemoglobin (9.0gm%), highest reticulocyte count (10%) and maximum rise in serum bilirubin (30.0mg/dL) were seen in cases of ABO compatibility. Direct & Indirect coomb's tests were positive in all cases of Rh incompatibility and in 60% cases of ABO incompatibility. CRP was positive in all cases of septicemia, 20% cases of ABO incompatibility and 5.8% cases of physiological jaundice. Band cell/neutrophil ratio of >0.2 was seen only in septicemia (66.6% cases). One case of G6PD deficiency was positive for falciparum malaria.
