- Abstract
The article discusses a study on the isolation and structural elucidation of the purple carotenoid from the crawfish Procambarus clarkii. Saponification was not performed during the isolation of carotenoids. The first carotenoid was presumed to be formed by the semioxidation of astaxanthin. No oxidative products of astaxanthin were detected when total carotenoids, extracted from the carapace of crawfish were subjected to thin layer chromatography. The oxidation of the compound was suggested to occur through the biological not the artificial process.
