- Title
SYMPATHY MACHINES: MEN OF FEELING AND THE AUTOMATON.
- Authors
Wetmore, Alex
- Abstract
The article presents an examination of the relationship between the automaton and masculinity in 18th-century British society. The connection between technology, gender, and identity in British society of the period is considered, noting that extant research on the connection between automata and feminine identity has been performed, but scant research exists to connect automata with masculine identity. A discussion of the particular representation of the man of feeling within 18th-century automata is presented.
