- Abstract
A critique is presented of the novel "River of Smoke" by Amitav Ghosh, focusing on the book's depiction of the opium trade between China and Great Britain in the 19th century and the commodification of nature in Chinese cities such as Canton. Postcolonial and postmodern themes in the novel, urban ecology, and the history of China's relations with western countries are also discussed.
