- Abstract
The article discusses how the Douglas Country Health Department (DCHD) in Omaha, Nebraska responded to a school-based pertussis outbreak in late 2008. DCHD followed pertussis response protocols in which it identified the individuals who were in close contact with the 5-year-old student who was diagnosed with the disease. Chemoprophylaxis was recommended by the DCHD to the identified individuals. The outbreak, which had a total estimated cost of 52,000 dollars and 1,000 hours of staff time committed, was considered resource-intensive and expensive for the local health department.
