- Abstract
The authors discuss a study by J.-L. Vincent et al which reported the results of a prevalence survey of infections in intensive care units (ICU) worldwide and the association of these infections with outcomes of critically ill patients. Called Extended Prevalence of Infection in the ICU (EPIC II), the study revealed noteworthy insights into the practice patterns of antibiotic use and infection risks in ICU patients. They also emphasize the importance of the use of infection control measures in the ICU and the need to replace obsolete antibiotics.
