- Abstract
The Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE), is a chronic inflammatory disease that is associated with an accelerate development of atherosclerosis, which contributes with elevated rates morbid-mortality in patients with this disease. The prevalence of cardiometabolic risk factors and biomarkers of inflammation in patients with SLE was evaluated in comparison with a control group. The sample consisted of 70 patients with SLE and 70 controls. The clinical, anthropometric and biochemical variables as well as inflammatory parameters were analyzed. The data were analyzed by descriptive statistics and both groups were compared using the Student's ttest and Fisher's exact test; both with a level of significance p = 0.05. The odds ratio [OR] and its corresponding 95% confidence interval IC95% [OR] was also calculated in order to characterize the association. Patients with SLE presented an average age of 44.1 ± 11.2 years, 60.6% women and 39.4% men, meanwhile the control group was characterized by an average age of 52.9 ± 6.4 years, 52.8%, women and 47.1% males. Among the cardiometabolic factors evaluated, the waist/hip index, body mass index, glycaemia, creatinine, total cholesterol, VLDL-c and triglycerides were significantly higher in the patients than in the controls. HDL-c concentrations were significantly decreased in both study groups. Inflammatory parameters: counting leukocytes, Globular Sedimentation Rate (ESR), fibrinogen, interleukins (IL-6, IL-8) and C-Reactive Protein (CRP) were significantly higher in the LES group than in the control group. Patients with SLE presented a proinflammatory and dyslipidemic state, that favors the development of cardiovascular disease, associated with a higher incidence of cardiometabolic risk factors and inflammation biomarkers.
