- Abstract
Introduction: Respiratory infections, particularly pneumonia, are among the most important causes of morbidity and mortality in the elderly population. Objectives: To evaluate the impact of Influenza Vaccination Campaigns on hospitalizations and deaths in the elderly due to pneumonia in the municipality of João Neiva/ES from 2010 to 2015. Methods: The data used were from DATASUS, in the hospitalization authorization register (SIH), Mortality Information System (SIM) and Information System of the National Immunization Program (SI-PNI). Only individuals ≥ 60 years old were included according to the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE). Results: The number of hospitalizations for pneumonia was 84 cases from 2010 to 2015, being 45.2% in men and 54.8% in women. Mortality from pneumonia was 17 deaths, 11 occurred in men and 6 in female population. Conclusion: In the municipality of João Neiva, there is a slight change in morbidity and mortality indicators for both sexes, with different patterns between age groups, suggesting a positive impact on the prevention of hospitalizations and deaths in the elderly after the introduction of the vaccination campaign against the flu.
