- Abstract
Introduction: Compliance with health care standards in Panama is unknown. Objective: To estimate compliance with health care standards for secondary prevention of Noncommunicable Diseases (NCDs) and possible associated factors in Panama. Materials and methods: Data from the National Health Survey of Panama (ENSPA) 2019 were used. To assess compliance with the TechnicalAdministrative Standards for Adults and the Elderly, and the Technical, Administrative and Protocols for Oral Health Care, a score was created based on the percentage of measures complied with at the individual level by sex, age, presence of diabetes mellitus (DM) and other NCDs. Using linear regressions, the association of sociodemographic factors with compliance was assessed. Results: Individual compliance was 51.1% (49.9%52. 3%) and was associated with female sex, diagnosis of DM < 6 years, schooling, residing in rural areas, family history of DM, at least one annual health checkup and drinking alcohol, while physical inactivity, age and residing in indigenous areas were associated with lower compliance. Conclusions: It can be seen that, on average, each individual complies with half of the national norms for the secondary prevention of NCDs according to age, sex and the presence of NCDs. It is necessary to pay attention to the norms in order to prevent and detect the damage of these diseases in the general population.
