- Abstract
The article examines the intertwining of local and international influences in the work of the Toowoomba-born and Brisbane, Queensland-educated artist Jesse Jewhurst Hilder. It argues that Hilder's art demonstrates how closely entwined Australia, including Queensland, was in the networks of modernity which existed in the late 19th and early 20th century. In addition, it cites that with the lack of opportunities for artists in colonial Queensland, the author argues that 1890s Brisbane was far from a cultural wasteland and that its influence on Hilder's artistic formation needs to be reinstated into the story of his life and art. To support such argument, the author presents a brief outline of Hilder's early artistic experiences as recounted in various biographical accounts.
