- Abstract
Objective: The aim of this study was to compare the anesthetic method preferences of primiparous and multiparous patients scheduled for elective caesarean section using a two-stage questionnaire. Furthermore, it was planned to determine the factors affecting the anesthesia tecnique preferences of the patients. Material and Methods: A total of 200 patients with full-term pregnancy, 100 primiparous and 100 multiparous patients who were scheduled for elective cesarean section, were included in the study. Patients were asked to complete a two-stage questionnaire. After the questionnaire was completed, verbal information was given about anesthesia methods by an anesthesiologist. After verbal information, patients were asked whether they desired to change their preferred anesthesia method. Demographic-obstetric information of the patients and their responses to the questionnaire were recorded and the data were analyzed using appropriate statistical tests. Results: Ninety-eight (98%) multiparous patients and 65 (65%) primiparous patients had knowledge about anesthesia technique (p <0.001). The majority of the participants (n = 59, 36.19%) stated that they received the most information from the anesthesiologist. Twenty-one (21%) primiparous patients and 9 (9%) multiparous patients initially refused regional anesthesia. After verbal information provided by the anesthesiologist, nine pimipar patients who rejected regional anesthesia (42.8%) changed their preference to regional anesthesia. Conclusion: Multiparous patients prefer the regional anesthesia method to a higher rate than the primiparous patients. Detailed verbal information about the anesthetic technique by the anesthesiologist may increase the preference of patients for regional anesthesia.
