- Abstract
An article on the perception of Germanic influences on the cultures of the neighboring countries of Belgium and Luxembourg is presented. The author discusses the increasing homogenization of European nations, but also emphasizes the role of the German language as a linguistic nationalism, which reflects the German sphere of influence. The influence of the English language and the influx of Turkish immigrants into Germany are both examined as factors which lessen the monolingual nature of German culture, while linguistic tensions between the Flemish and the Walloons in Belgium allegedly have fragmented that nation.
