- Authors

- Abstract
Coade stone, a type of fired artificial stone manufactured by the Coade Stone Manufactory in Lambeth, London, is most known for its use by Georgian London's architects and designers for its attractive and hard-wearing properties. But the factory also produced several freestanding sculptures and monuments that stood as singular artistic works. This article examines the ways in which the Coade Stone Manufactory was able to produce classically influenced artworks, identifying their ancient precedents and sources, and exploring the role of the ancient world in the creation of contemporary sculpture, drawing particular attention to two motifs: Britannia and the River God. In doing so, it centres the Coade Manufactory within eighteenth- and nineteenth-century cultures of art, commerce and manufacture and the reception of ancient art.
