- Authors
Preimesberger, Rudolf
- Abstract
The author analyzes a letter written by Lelio Guidiccioni to Gian Lorenzo Bernini in 1633. The author describes the rhetorical nature of the letter and its ekphrasis of Bernini's portrait bust of Pope Urban VIII. The author examines Guidiccioni's descriptions of the idea of Bernini's modernity and cultural importance, Bernini's relationship with Urban VIII, and the appropriate reaction to the bust. The author discusses Guidiccioni's exploration of the difference in text and image and describes the representation of the "mozzetta" in Bernini's papal busts, including one of Pope Innocent X Pamphilj. Also described is the concept of "paragone," or the debate over the superiority of painting or sculpture.
