- Abstract
This article discusses the study of female impotence during the Middle Ages. The author comments on the medical and legal aspects of impotence and describes the physical medical examination process at the time. She also considers the importance that was placed on marital sexual relations, citing marriage laws from the period, and the negative impact that female impotence had on marriage. The relationship between medicine and religion during the Middle Ages is explored and medieval surgical procedures attempting to correct impotence are also examined.
