- Abstract
The historical formation of the symbols (shield, flag and anthem), of the Principality of Asturias, in the Kingdom of Spain, is studied with material prominence of the Cross as an emblem of the Asturian Monarchy since the 8th century; and personal prominence of Gaspar Melchor de Jovellanos since the end of the 18th century by rigorously and the reflectively dealing with the origin of the Principality's arms, discarding false or erroneous confusing emblems. However, a confused and hypothetical origin that continues to characterize the Asturian anthem, the popular song Asturias, Patria querida, from the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, whose lyrics and music continue to be of disputed interpretation, as has been attempted to be determined in the investigation.
