- Abstract
In today's era of globalisation, technological innovation is becoming ever more important and decisive for the enhanced competitiveness and economic and social development of any nation. Technology foresight (TF) as a relatively new mechanism for strategic decision-making has been recognised as a useful instrument for establishing common views of the business and academic sphere on future technology and development trends. TF can serve as a platform for strategic R&D planning. The paper deals with the first technology foresight study conducted in Slovenia. This exercise, based on key technologies and the Delphi methodological approach, has become important for strengthening the transition process in a country which has undergone radical economic and social reforms in the last decade. In line with the results of previous research and existing R&D and innovation capabilities, the research focused on eight thematic fields: ICT; advanced materials; biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, nutrition; environmentally acceptable manufacturing, sustainable construction; traffic and mobility, medicine — care for the elderly. Through the survey, expert panels and an elimination process identifying five to ten of the most promising technological theses in each thematic field were selected.
