- Abstract
In the present article, we describe the concept of romantic relationships and its specificity taking into account two major theories: attachment and intimacy. These theories are the first ones which have highlighted the importance of emotions in forming, maintenance and dissolution of romantic relationships. We also discuss two taxonomies of emotions. The traditional view related to the emotions' valence, positive versus negative, and a new typology of selfish-pro-social emotions. More recently, authors have proposed taxonomy for negative emotions in couples, because these emotions may have a negative but also a positive impact on romantic relationships. Moreover, negative emotions which are considered to have a positive impact, might still have the negative impact in some situations. Finally, we present a sum of studies which have been conducted to observe the impact of specific emotions (hurt, anger, disinterest and boredom) on romantic relationships, and the ways in which this new taxonomy can be further integrated into couple research.
