- Title
Grizzly Bears Still Trapped in Their Own Endzone.
- Authors
HAMMER, KEITH
- Abstract
Contrary to claims made in letters to the editor, the grizzly bear population is not "out of control" and there are not "way too many grizzly bears in this country." In fact, grizzly bears are still limited to about 2% of their former numbers and range, similar to when they were listed as "threatened" under the Endangered Species Act in 1975. The Northern Continental Divide Ecosystem's grizzly bear population is estimated to be increasing by 2.3% per year, while the human population in the area is 345 times greater than the bear population and increasing at a higher rate. The article argues that grizzly bears need the full protections of the ESA to help them thrive.
