In Our Deeply Unequal World, the Garbage Rises Ever Higher.

- Abstract
Mount Everest, once a protected national park and world heritage site, has become a garbage dump due to the increase in climbers and the rise of a wealthy population. The cost of climbing Everest can reach up to $160,000, which is affordable for the global population of "ultra high net worth individuals" worth at least $30 million. While the fees paid by climbers can make a difference for local Sherpa guides and families, they do little to alleviate Nepal's overall poverty. Additionally, climbers leave behind litter and environmental damage, contaminating the local watershed. The article suggests that instead of serving the wealthy, societies should focus on creating public services that benefit everyone.
