- Title
Radioactive Leaks from Monticello Reactor in Minnesota Threaten the Mississippi.

- Abstract
A leaking pipe at Xcel Energy's Monticello reactor in Minnesota has caused a radioactive pollution problem. The leak, which occurred in November 2023, released tritium into the groundwater at levels 250 times higher than the legal limit for drinking water. The reactor is a General Electric Mark I design, similar to the reactors that melted down in Fukushima in 2011. Tritium leaks are a common issue in the nuclear industry, and the Monticello spill was one of the largest in the country. Xcel Energy has attempted to contain the contaminated groundwater with an underground metal barrier, but concerns remain about the potential impact on the Mississippi River.
