- Abstract
The article presents information on a report released by the U.S. National Research Council (NRC) in January 2007. The report warns that rising temperature, recurrent drought and mounting demand for water would result in a fierce competition for water supplies in the western U.S. The report especially focuses on the decline in the average water flows in Colorado River. According to a summary of paleohydrologic reconstructions of river flows based on the annual growth rings of long-lived trees, which reflect annual rainfall, flows have varied considerably over past 500 years, with multi-year droughts not uncommon. The report recommends a comprehensive, basin-wide study of water practices and supply-and-demand issues to provide the basis for proactive planning.
