- Abstract
The article presents a history of the immigrant population of the town of New Bedford, Massachusetts and examines social and economic reasons why many members of the Maya ethnic group of Guatemala have relocated to New Bedford. It chronicles the events of the Guatemalan civil war of the 1980s which led many residents to flee for safety in the U.S. and to jobs in the fish processing and garment industry in New Bedford. It also describes how a 2007 U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raid on the Michael Bianco Inc. textile factory aimed at removing illegal immigrant workers has had an impact on the social conditions of the New Bedford community.
