- Abstract
In this article, the author examines the discourse between students and instructors in developmental mathematics classes. Research in mathematics education identifies communication as an important process skill that is critical to how students develop a strong conceptual understanding. The author illustrates how student misconceptions can be made evident through class discussions and concludes that attention to student thinking, writing, and reading ability are important factors in teaching developmental mathematics.
