- Title
"The passion-flower at the gate": Tennyson's Poetry in the "Annals" of Julia Margaret Cameron.
- Authors
Martinez, Michele
- Abstract
The article focuses on Julia Margaret Cameron's use of poetry quotations in her essay "Annals of My Glass House" and her choice of them. It contends that Cameron makes use of Tennyson's poetry to express an "imperialist visually" and rejects her opponents by recalling the harsh tones of Tennyson's dramatic poems. It also talks about Cameron's friendship with Alfred Tennyson, how she turned her homes into photo studios, and the relationship between the familial gaze and her portraits.
