- Abstract
A critique is presented of the poem "The Dream of Gerontius" by John Henry Newman, focusing on the late 19th century reception of the poem's depiction of an Anglican purgatory. Devotional poetry, death in poetry, and Oxford Movement relations between the Anglican and Roman Catholic churches in the 19th century are discussed, as well as Newman's religious and conciliatory views.
