- Abstract
The article discusses the batik trade in Java, Indonesia. It relates that the art of batik making has become symbolically representative of Javanese to both foreigners and Indonesians of Central Javanese origin. The Yogyakarta and Surakarta areas were the established batik centers of Java. It mentions that during the early period in central Javanese court culture, batik is considered a fine art processing the charisma of cosmic forces, and as a folk art for commercial purposes. The early commercial batik trades in the area was dated from the mid-eighteenth century.
